Benton Community Garden

The Santa Fe neighborhood initiated the garden at Benton and Linwood Boulevards as an effort to beautify the area. Historic Green and US Green Building Council Central Plains chapter partnered to execute the project. Phase I involved the installation of low-carbon concrete sidewalks, a 2500-gallon underground water tank, a rainwater capture system, and a beautiful double-action hand pump the residents use to water their flowers or vegetables. Raised planter beds were installed in the center circle and were filled with native or climate-adaptive plants that require little water once established and are low-maintenance. Phase II involved the construction of the rainwater trellis, the creation of a rain garden, center circle improvements, the addition of raised vegetable beds, and a new Paw Paw/Yew garden.
