Since 2009, seven vacant homes have been rehabilitated, six of them in the urban core of Kansas City and one in western Independence. The Constructing Futures LLC program is seen as a “win-win-win” situation for the individuals who obtain on-the job skills training, the families who receive a home in which to live and the residents of a neighborhood, who no longer have to live near a vacant house, which can often be a haven for crime and illegal drug activity.
There are three core requirements of each one of our projects:
1. Taking a vacant house and making it livable again, which helps to improve and re-energize a neighborhood.
2. Providing job training and skills to members of the community who are unemployed, underemployed or have been incarcerated.
3. Giving a newly remodeled home to a family who has recently struggled with homelessness.
